Because nothing says “relaxing vacation” like a bath in water with more bacteria than a train station toilet
A few days before half of Mexico makes a pilgrimage to the coast, it turns out that six beaches in the country have decided to offer an extra in their waters: a generous cocktail of fecal enterococci that exceeds up to 7.765% the “safe” limit according to the WHO. Yes, you read that right: it’s not a typo, it’s simply Tijuana I competing for the world record for “How much shit fits in 100 ml of water?”.
The ranking of the beaches you prefer to admire… from a hospital
The Cofepris, in its infinite wisdom, gives us the top 6 destinations where immersion is equivalent to playing Russian roulette with your digestive system:
- Tijuana Beach I: 15,531 bacteria/100ml (in case you wanted to swim in a literal breeding ground).
- Rosarito Beach: 1,722 (a “light” option for the less adventurous).
- Icacos in Acapulco: 4,663 (because what would a vacation be without a little… medical excitement?).
And in case anyone thought that this was a localized problem, the institution proudly clarifies that it analyzed 2,337 samples at 393 points. Wow, almost as many selfies as the brave people who ignore this report will upload.
The cause? Storm drains, wastewater and —attention— “informal trade activities”. Because of course, that beach taco stand had to contribute its grain of sand (or something less appetizing) to the ecosystem.
