Sheinbaum suspends its morning shows for Christmas festivities
The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, confirmed the temporary suspension of her emblematic morning conferences, known as “Mañaneras del Pueblo”, from Wednesday, December 24 to Friday, December 26. The decision, officially communicated through its digital channels, is part of the end-of-year celebrations, with the aim of granting a period of rest to the communication team of the Presidency of the Republic.
Through a message on her official social networks, the head of the federal Executive extended her wishes for a Merry Christmas to all Mexican citizens. “Due to the celebrations, there will be no Mañanera del Pueblo from Wednesday, December 24 to Friday, December 26. Merry Christmas to all the people of Mexico!” wrote the president.
An unusual decision process: the vote in the Treasury Room
The formal announcement was preceded by a singular episode during the conference on Tuesday, December 23 in the Treasury Room of the National Palace. In an unconventional gesture, Sheinbaum submitted the holding of Wednesday’s briefing to consultation, proposing a show of hands among the journalists and the team present.
After a first count that she herself declared a “tie”, the president proceeded to a second round. “Who wants there to be a morning conference of the people tomorrow?” he asked, registering 13 votes in favor. Immediately afterwards, he asked: “Who wants there to be no morning of the people tomorrow?”, obtaining 17 votes for the suspension. “No, they already won,” concluded Sheinbaum, accepting the result.
Based on this exercise, he declared a recess. “We are going to give vacation to the entire Presidency staff, to all the colleagues, to whom we thank… that this year we were together at 7:30 in the morning sharp,” he explained. The president emphasized that this parenthesis would allow a brief rest before resuming the information agenda on Monday, December 29.
Context and details of the communication break
This interval in the daily press conferences represents a significant pause in the government’s communication strategy, established as a pillar of transparency and direct contact. Sheinbaum took advantage of the moment to send a broader festive message: “To all those who hear and see us, Merry Christmas, have a good night… may Santa Claus bring many gifts to all the boys and girls.”
The president also shared a personal detail about her plans for Christmas Eve dinner, mentioning her predilection for romeritos, a traditional Mexican dish. “Oh, I still don’t know, romeritos, that’s what I like the most,” he commented. To close the last conference of the year, he requested the reproduction of the Christmas classic “Feliz Navidad“, by Puerto Rican singer-songwriter José Feliciano, a song released in 1970 that has become a global holiday anthem.
This scheduled suspension reflects an adaptation of the rigorous presidential reporting schedule to the holidays, balancing accountability work with the cycle of national celebrations. The voting episode, for its part, highlights a style of interaction that seeks, symbolically, to incorporate the voice of the attendees in logistical decisions, although the final authority over the agenda falls on the head of the Executive.
