Goodbye eternal procedures, hello transparency (or so they promise)
President Claudia Sheinbaum, in her mission to make the government work faster than a SAT procedure, announced changes to the **Acquisitions Law** and Public Works. Translation: less paperwork, more traceability and – hopefully – less *bites* under the table. Because, let’s be honest, who hasn’t seen a public project start in *”February”* and end up in *administrative limbo* until October?
Among the *legal upgrades* the following stand out:
What changes (and finally)
- Reverse auctions and strategic negotiations: Basically, the government will now be able to haggle like in the flea market (but with a bill). The objective: pay less for that USB cable that costs three times as much in tenders.
- 65% mandatory national content: So that *made in Mexico* is not just a slogan on tourist t-shirts.
- compraNet 2.0: The public purchasing platform will now include a *”digital store”* for suppliers. Was it necessary? Maybe, but it sounds more modern than a fax.
Raquel Buenrostro, secretary of **Anti-corruption**, stressed that this will avoid *”meetings in the dark”* (read: agreements under the table). Although, of course, there will always be the classic *”the system crashed”* as an excuse.
Trump gives his opinion (just because)
In an unexpected – and random – turn, Donald Trump dropped a *”she’s a great woman”* about Sheinbaum during a meeting. Among praises for his elegance and kindness, he made it clear that *”he does not want to harm Mexico”*. Unsolicited translation: *”I hope they don’t criticize me on Twitter for this”*.
Will it work? Who knows. But at least it sounds better than continuing to wait for bureaucracy to cure itself with homeopathy.
