The Strategic Return of an Experienced Pilot
The official confirmation that the Mexican driver Sergio Pérez will join the Cadillac Formula 1 Team for the 2026 season constitutes a major strategic move within the Formula 1 panorama. This signing, announced this Tuesday by the American team, positions the experienced man from Guadalajara alongside the Finn Valtteri Bottas, forming a duo of drivers with an exceptionally broad combined background in the Great Circus. The contractual agreement is initially stipulated for a two-year cycle, with an optional clause to extend it to a third season, subject to the performance and results obtained during the initial campaigns.
A Commitment to Experience and Leadership
The team director, Graeme Lowdon, based the decision on the experience and knowledge accumulated by both drivers. “Signing two drivers as experienced as Bottas and Checo is a clear sign of our intentions. They have seen it all and know what it takes to succeed in Formula 1. But more importantly, they understand what it means to help build a team,” said Lowdon. He added that “his leadership, feedback, instincts forged in competition and, of course, his speed will be invaluable as we bring this project to life”, also thanking the Mercedes team for its cooperation in the process.
The value of Sergio Pérez transcends his ability behind the wheel. His career, spanning teams such as Sauber, McLaren, Force India, Racing Point and, most recently, Red Bull Racing, has given him a comprehensive understanding of internal operations, development dynamics and adaptation to various regulatory changes. This versatility is crucial for a newly formed team that must build its competitive identity from a solid foundation.
Background and Context of a Key Addition
The path towards this agreement began after the departure of the driver from the Red Bull structure on December 18. Despite having a contract valid until the end of 2026, a sequence of irregular performances, together with a decreasing performance of the car, precipitated his departure. His seat was initially occupied by the New Zealander Liam Lawson, who was later replaced by the Japanese Yuki Tsunoda, neither of whom managed to consolidate according to the team’s initial expectations.
Checo Pérez’s track record supports his hiring. Throughout his fourteen seasons in the top category of motorsports, he has accumulated a total of six victories. He achieved his first victory with Racing Point at the 2020 Sakhir Grand Prix, and added five more victories during his time with Red Bull Racing between 2021 and 2024. His contribution was fundamental to the conquest of Max Verstappen‘s drivers’ championship in 2021, and he himself reached runner-up in the world championship in 2023. His ability to perform under intense media and sporting pressure, especially as the Dutchman’s teammate for four years, is another invaluable asset that he brings to his new project.
For his part, Valtteri Bottas, coming from Mercedes where he served as reserve driver for 2025, brings ten victories achieved between 2017 and 2021, adding his experience to create a line of elite drivers.
The Structure and Future of the Cadillac F1 Team
The Cadillac Formula 1 Team is not a conventional project. Backed by TWG Motorsports and the automobile giant General Motors (GM), its operations will be distributed among three technology and competition nerve centers: Fishers, in Indiana; Charlotte, North Carolina; and Silverstone, in the United Kingdom. This tripartite structure seeks to deliberately fuse American engineering and innovation with tradition, expertise and technical knowledge deeply rooted in the European racing ecosystem. The incorporation of Pérez and Bottas represents the cornerstone on which the team’s competitive culture will be built for its debut in 2026.
This return, materialized just eight months after his departure from the grid, not only marks a new chapter in the Mexican’s illustrious career, but also symbolizes a bold commitment to stability and expert knowledge in the always volatile and technologically complex arena of Formula 1.
