The Ministry of Public Education (SEP) called on the dissident teachers to suspend the demonstrations in Mexico City and return to the classrooms to close the school year. The call occurs in the midst of the mobilizations of the National Coordinator of Education Workers (CNTE).
Attention to demands and salary data
During the morning conference of President Claudia Sheinbaum, the Secretary of Education, Mario Delgado, stated that the federal government maintains open channels to address the sector’s disagreements. Delgado explained that teacher salaries have had a sustained recovery:
- During Felipe Calderón’s six-year term, a teacher earned around 9,200 pesos a month.
- With Enrique Peña Nieto, the salary rose to more than 11 thousand pesos.
- During the government of Andrés Manuel López Obrador it reached 17,635 pesos.
- Currently it exceeds 20 thousand pesos.
The official recognized the right to peaceful demonstration, but considered it unnecessary to maintain protests when there are dialogue tables to resolve the teachers’ demands.
