Rescue Operation in Complex Terrain
MEXICO CITY. President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo confirmed that the Secretary of the Navy (Semar) is in charge of the complex maneuvers for the rescue of the car of the Interoceanic Train that suffered a derailment in the state of Oaxaca. This specialized logistics operation faces significant challenges due to the orography of the place and the imperative need to preserve the integrity of the railway infrastructure.
During her morning conference, the federal president explained that the accident area presents considerable obstacles for the deployment of heavy machinery, such as heavy-duty cranes. For this reason, the engineering and rescue teams are conducting a thorough technical evaluation before initiating any convoy extraction action.
“The Secretary of the Navy is working on it, it is not an easy place to place a crane… so they are going to see a way to recover that wagon because it was a wagon that fell. They are technically reviewing how to remove it, due to the difficulty of placing a crane in such a narrow place and not to damage the track as well,” Sheinbaum said, underlining the meticulousness of the process.
Technical Strategy and Next Steps
The president explained that the train accident occurred in an area with difficult access, which has forced the authorities to design a thorough intervention strategy. The main objective is to remove the damaged car without compromising the structure of the railway, a critical element for the future reactivation of the interoceanic corridor.
Sheinbaum indicated that, once the technical evaluations have been completed and the final action protocol has been established, the federal government will report precisely on the recovery procedure. This analytical approach seeks to balance speed with operational security, avoiding collateral damage to a strategic transportation asset.
In parallel with the rescue operation, the president reported that 17 people remain hospitalized as a result of the derailment and expressed her condolences for the unfortunate death of one of the victims. The government response is structured around three fundamental axes: comprehensive care for victims and their families; a “deep, serious, rigorous” investigation to clarify the causes of the accident; and the review and strengthening of all security protocols. This last point is crucial not only for the Interoceanic Train, but to guarantee the reliable operation of all the country’s railway systems.
This incident highlights the challenges inherent in operating mega infrastructure projects in complex geographies. The coordinated response between Semar and other federal agencies demonstrates a crisis management protocol that prioritizes human security, the preservation of infrastructural heritage and information transparency. The success of the rescue will depend on the correct application of engineering solutions adapted to the restrictive terrain conditions.
