Changes in the judicial process
A court in Illinois rescheduled the hearing of Joaquín Guzmán López, son of the historic leader of the Sinaloa Cartel, Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán. The new date was set for August 31, canceling the one scheduled for June 1.
Guzmán López has already pleaded guilty to two charges related to drug trafficking and organized crime. According to court records, he chose to voluntarily surrender to US authorities, taking Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada with him, with the aim of negotiating a more lenient plea deal.
His brother, Ovidio Guzmán, previously extradited by the Mexican government, also pleaded guilty under a scheme that includes active cooperation with the United States government.
For its part, the US State Department maintains a reward of 10 million dollars for information that leads to the capture of other leaders of the faction: Iván Archivaldo and Jesús Alfredo Guzmán Salazar.
