El Divo de Linares continues breaking records (and hearts)
It seems that Raphael is not only immortal on stage, but also at the awards. The Spanish singer, whose real name is Rafael Martos (in case anyone thought “Raphael” was a first name), will add another award to his already bulging collection of trophies. The Latin Recording Academy, in an act of recognition that some will say comes late and others says comes just in time, will name him Person of the Year in November. Could it be that they finally realized that without him, Latin music would be much less scandalous?
A gala to celebrate… or to ask for forgiveness?
The event will take place in Las Vegas, a city known for its excesses, which seems appropriate to honor a man who turned the dramatic into an art. “We feel very proud,” said Manuel Abud, director of the Academy, in a statement that, let’s be honest, sounded more like “we finally decided.” Was six decades of career not enough to realize his “unmistakable style”? Thank goodness they recognize him before he turns 90!
The tribute concert will include versions of their hits performed by other artists, because what better way to celebrate an icon than by having others sing their songs. Raphael, always humble (or tired of so much homage), declared: “It is an honor that I will always carry in my heart.” Although, with the number of awards he has, one wonders if he still has room in that heart.
From Linares to the world (and back)
Born in 1943, Raphael not only conquered music with songs like “Mi gran noche” or “Escándalo”, but also cinema and the most prestigious stages. From Madison Square Garden to the Olympia in Paris, the man has sung everywhere… except, perhaps, in the house of that neighbor who still doesn’t forgive his high notes.
And in case anyone doubted his resilience, the artist overcame brain lymphoma in 2024 and announced a new tour. Withdraw? That’s for mortals. At 82 years old, Raphael continues to prove that the show must go on, even if the body (and event organizers) say otherwise.
So get ready, because in November Las Vegas will witness a show that, like everything Raphael does, promises to be grand, dramatic and, above all, unforgettable. Who said legends rest?
