Another plan, another name, and memory?
Less than one hundred days before the start of the 2026 FIFA Cup, the federal government presented the Kukulkán Plan. The head of the SSPC, Omar García Harfuch, broke it down at the morning conference in Zapopan. Sounds impressive. As usual.
“Designed to guarantee protection conditions before, during and after the holding of this international event,” he explained.
The strategy promises coordination with Canada and the United States. It integrates more than twenty federal, state and municipal entities. Exchange of information, approved protocols, simulated exercises. The complete menu.
The promise of the perfect device
It will be necessary. Millions of visitors will come to the country. García Harfuch explained that the plan includes permanent monitoring and early warning systems. Devices will be strengthened at airports, roads and lodging centers.
“With these actions, the government of Mexico reaffirms its commitment…”, he said.
They have already set up a table with representatives from FIFA and the Security Cabinet institutions. The ultimate goal is to project Mexico as a safe destination for massive events. The theory is impeccable. Practice is another story.
It’s always the same before the big show: plans with grandiose names, coordination tables, promises of impeccable operations. Then the circus passes, the cameras leave and we are left with the same landscape as always. Does anyone remember plans for past events? Exact.
