Any Tuesday (or not) in the concrete jungle
Imagine this scene: it’s Tuesday morning, you were probably fighting with the cell phone alarm or psyching yourself up for another workday. Meanwhile, on the always predictable (note the sarcasm) Insurgentes Avenue, a water pipe driver decided that the traffic rules were a mere suggestion, like those productivity tips that no one follows. The result was the vehicular chaos that we all, deep down, expect every time we go out onto the streets of CDMX.
The episode, worthy of a real action episode with very bad specialists, was recorded in the San Pedro Zacatenco neighborhood, Gustavo A. Madero mayor’s office. The plot is simple: a red light, a pipe that ignores it with the audacity of an influencer jumping the line, and bam!: multiple collision that involved four private cars and a truck on the San Pedro Santa Clara route. Fortunately, the public transport was empty, because if not, this story would be much more dramatic and less ironic.
The (not so) anonymous heroes of the asphalt
As in any good urban drama, the emergency services could not be missing arriving at the scene with sirens blaring. His intervention was key, although the number of injuries was, surprisingly, low for the level of the show. Only the driver of one of the cars was policoncontunado, which is the elegant term for saying “he got one of those scares and got some pretty good bruises.” Nothing that a good meme and a few days of rest can’t cure.
The elements of the Lindavista sector of the SSC also made an appearance, acting as first responders. Their mission: to coordinate the road aid, protect the area from gossip (I mean, from the accident) and facilitate the removal of the vehicles so that traffic could return to its usual state of collapse. Basically, they were the moderators of a very conflictive WhatsApp group, but in real life and with reflective vests.
This incident is the perfect reminder that in the capital, the law of gravity is optional, but the law of the boldest behind the wheel is absolute. A pipe, those quiet giants that we see distributing water, became the agent of chaos in one of the most emblematic and busy avenues. Ironic, right? The vehicle that carries a vital resource for the city, interrupting the life of the city itself in the abruptest way possible.
And so, between summonses, tow trucks and the inevitable spectacle of curious onlookers recording with their cell phones, the morning at GAM once again demonstrated that normality is just an abstract concept. The next time someone tells you that the city is boring, tell them this story. Of course, cross the green ones carefully, lest a multi-ton vehicle decide that red is a very old-fashioned color.
