Political confrontation over the Maru Campos case
The National Action Party (PAN) closed ranks in defense of the governor of Chihuahua, Maru Campos, and turned the case she faces with the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) into a new axis of confrontation with the federal government. The PAN leadership, headed by Jorge Romero Herrera, accused Morena of using the FGR as a tool of political pressure.
According to Romero, the ruling party has “crossed the line” by politicizing an investigation related to the presence of foreign agents in an operation against an alleged illicit laboratory in Chihuahua. The PAN leader maintained that the governor is the target of harassment for having fought criminal groups.
Questions to the FGR summons
Campos’ legal defense questioned the summons issued by the FGR, considering that it presents ambiguities regarding its procedural quality and the facts investigated. In his opinion, this could imply “procedural harassment.” The governor has not been formally charged.
In response, the PAN announced support mobilizations in different parts of the country and warned that it will respond politically to any attempt at intimidation. The conflict increases tension between the opposition and the federal government regarding security and the relationship with the United States.
Meanwhile, Morena has defended the actions of the FGR and denies any partisan motivation. The case remains open and Campos’ appearance is pending.
