An outstanding performance in the top category
The British driver Oliver Bearman, 20 years old, starred in one of the most outstanding feats of the season for his team, the American team owned by businessman Gene Haas. His fourth final position not only represents the best result of the year for the structure, but also equals the performance achieved in the distant Austrian Grand Prix in 2018, when the Frenchman Romain Grosjean finished in the same place.
The young competitor, who is competing in his first full season in Formula 1, has proven to be a strategic success for Haas. Aboard a complex car with development limitations, he has placed within the top ten in seven world championship events. His record of entries in the points zone includes: tenth place in Japan and Bahrain, ninth place in Singapore and Austin, eighth place in China, sixth in The Netherlands and fourth place in Mexico.
These performances have allowed him to contribute 32 of the 62 total points that the team has accumulated so far. This figure places him two units ahead of his experienced teammate, the Frenchman Esteban Ocon, who has twelve seasons of experience in the top category of world motorsport.
Career and projection of a future star
Bearman’s background in training championships pointed to exceptional talent. The driver entered the Ferrari team’s development program in 2022, after having been crowned champion in the German and Italian Formula 4 competitions during 2021. Only one year later he made the jump to the premier category of development single-seaters, Formula 2, where he added a total of four victories and demonstrated an outstanding capacity for adaptation.
In 2024, already with the role of official reserve driver for the Maranello team, he made his effective debut on the F1 grid. The opportunity arose unexpectedly when the Spaniard Carlos Sainz suffered a case of appendicitis just before the Saudi Arabia Grand Prix. Bearman took his place and made a dream debut, finishing the race in seventh position and immediately scoring points.
During the Mexican Grand Prix weekend, the Briton showed great performance since the qualifying sessions. He entered Q3 on Saturday, closing the session in tenth position. However, on the starting grid he benefited from a five-position penalty that Carlos Sainz had been carrying since the United States Grand Prix, which allowed him to start from ninth place.
At the start, Bearman showed great ability to gain positions, climbing to sixth place in the first laps. A subsequent incident between Lewis Hamilton‘s Ferrari and Max Verstappen‘s Red Bull catapulted him to an unexpected third position, which he managed to defend for more than half of the test. Pit stop strategies, however, later allowed Verstappen to regain his place.
The ultimate resistance under pressure
The final phase of the competition became a true test of endurance for the rookie. Bearman withstood the constant onslaught of Oscar Piastri‘s McLaren, who was determined not to give up any more points in the team fight after the victory of his teammate Lando Norris. The wheel-to-wheel battle continued until the last lap, where the appearance of a Virtual Safety Car neutralized the chase, leaving the McLaren driver without real overtaking options.
This factor allowed Bearman to breathe a sigh of relief and certify a golden result for a team accustomed to competing in the lower-middle part of the grid. Formula 1 has thus confirmed, in a forceful way, the projection of the Briton as a future star of motor sport. His ability to handle pressure, keep pace with established drivers and execute impeccable race strategy suggests extraordinary growth potential in the coming years.
Fourth place at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez is not just an isolated result, but the culmination of a process of adaptation and accelerated learning. It represents a turning point for both the driver’s career and for the Haas team, which finds in Bearman a top-level competitive value and a potential leader for its aspirations of progress in the constructors’ championship.
