Coordinated operations dismantle cells of the Sinaloa Cartel
In a series of strategic interventions, Mexican federal authorities managed to capture nine alleged members of the Sinaloa Cartel, belonging to the “Los Mayos” and “Los Chapitos” factions. The operations, carried out between August 11 and 14 in municipalities such as Navolato, Ahome and Culiacán, resulted in the seizure of weapons, vehicles and narcotics, evidencing the escalation of violence in the region.
Breakdown of interventions
The first operation occurred during a routine patrol of the Secretary of the Navy (Semar) near Bariometo, Navolato. Upon detecting a suspicious group linked to “Los Mayos”, the troops pursued and detained four individuals, including a 16-year-old teenager. Among those seized, the following stand out:
- Weapons: 3 rifles, 1 machine gun, 16 magazines and 478 cartridges.
- Logistics: 4 tactical vests, 28 tire punctures and doses of drugs.
At the same time, in Los Mochis, elements of the National Guard neutralized four members of the “Avendaño Special Forces” (FEA), a subgroup of “Los Mayos.” They were seized:
- 646 ammunition of various calibers.
- 2 vehicles and a package with cocaine.
Finally, in Culiacán, an alleged collaborator of “Los Chapitos” was arrested, with an arsenal that included 119 grams of cocaine and communication equipment.
Strategic implications
These actions reflect a multifaceted approach against organized crime, with the participation of Sedena, FGR and SSPC. According to analysts, the seizure of ponchallantas suggests blocking tactics typical of territorial disputes, while the diversity of weapons points to a militarization of criminal groups. Data from the National Citizen Observatory indicate that Sinaloa will concentrate 23% of the confrontations between cartels in 2025.
Experts emphasize that, although these blows affect logistical operations, the hierarchical structure of the cartel remains intact. “The arrest of lieutenants rarely impacts the flow of drugs,” warns analyst Eduardo Guerrero.
