Morocco wins the 2027 FIFA Congress: African power in the game

Rabat will host the 2027 FIFA Congress, where Infantino will seek his last term.

Rabat, the new FIFA field

Morocco has just scored a great goal: it will host the FIFA Congress in 2027. The event is in Rabat, and it is not just any meeting. There the re-election of Gianni Infantino will be defined, who is aiming for his last four-year term.

The announcement came this Thursday, and Infantino himself released it with that tone of his: “I feel honored and, at the same time, humble.” Come on, we can already see what will be a solo ride coming, because so far there is no rival in sight.

The FIFA money machine

FIFA is armored. With reserves in the billions, thanks to the 2026 World Cup in North America, each member federation will receive at least $8 million during this cycle. Infantino, for his part, pocketed more than 6 million last year. And meanwhile, he rubs shoulders with Trump and the Saudi crown prince, owners of the 2034 World Cup.

“FIFA’s financial security allows it to pay at least 8 million dollars during this presidential term to each member federation with the right to vote.”

African power in the game

Morocco is not just the host: it is the new heavyweight of African football. The CAF, led by Patrice Motsepe, has already promised its support to Infantino. And the 54 African votes are key in these elections. The North African country will also co-organize the 2030 World Cup with Spain and Portugal.

Fouzi Lekjaa, the strongman of Moroccan football, is vice president of CAF and member of the FIFA Council. Under his command, the men’s team made history at Qatar 2022 by reaching the semifinals. That prompted the candidacy for the World Cup, and now also for this congress.

Infantino’s path

Infantino came to power in 2016, in the midst of the corruption scandal that brought down Blatter. His initial three-year term did not count towards the 12-year limit, so he could be until 2031. By then, it will be 15 years at the helm of world football.

Morocco, meanwhile, continues to add. He organized the African Cup of Nations this year, although with controversy: the final was chaos, and the title was decided on the desks. But that doesn’t take away the shine of his moment. Rabat 2027 will be its showcase, and FIFA, its stage.

Netherlands vs Morocco in Monterrey for the 2026 World Cup

The Rayados stadium will host the round of 16 duel between Europeans and Africans.

Monterrey is preparing to host one of the most attractive duels of the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup. The Netherlands and Morocco will meet on Monday, June 29 at 7:00 p.m. (central Mexico) at the Rayados stadium.

The match corresponds to the cross between the leader of Group F and the second place in Group C. The Netherlands secured first place after beating Tunisia 3-1. For its part, Morocco finished second in Group C, only surpassed by Brazil on goal difference. Both added seven points and tied in the direct duel.

The Monterrey fans were looking forward to a direct elimination match in their city. The presence of Clockwork Orange in the Rayados building had become an illusion that is now fulfilled.

The meeting promises intensity. The Netherlands arrives with its characteristic fluid attack, while Morocco has shown defensive solidity and the ability to take advantage of counterattacks. It will be a duel of styles between the European tactical order and the African grit.

Tickets for the match are already sold out. Local authorities have arranged mobility and security operations to receive thousands of fans who will arrive from different parts of the country and abroad.

Paraguay also closed the group stage with four units. However, the tiebreaker criteria relegated him to third place. Now the Guaraní squad will have to wait for the other groups to close to find out if they enter among the eight best third places that advance to the next round.

United States falls to Türkiye but manages to qualify

Dramatic 3-2 at SoFi Stadium does not prevent the United States from reaching the round of 32.

The United States team lost 3-2 to Türkiye at SoFi Stadium, but secured its ticket to the round of 32. The European team said goodbye to the tournament with a victory in its last match.

Party development

The game started at a slow pace. In the 2nd minute, Auston Trusty took advantage of a corner kick to open the scoring. Türkiye reacted quickly: in the 10th minute, Arda Güler, from Real Madrid, equalized after a defensive oversight.

The United States tried to regain the lead, but a goal disallowed for offside in the 29th minute baffled them. Türkiye capitalized: in the 32nd minute, Orkun Kökçü turned the score around (2-1). With that result the first half ended, amid complaints from the Los Angeles fans.

In the second half, Sebastián Berhalter equalized in the 48th minute to make it 2-2. The US coach sent Alejandro Zendejas to the field to look for greater offensive depth, but an injury to Trusty in the 90th minute threw the defense out of balance. In stoppage time, Kaan Ayhan scored the final 3-2.
