An Epic Battle for the Health of a Nation
In a dramatic turn that will mark the destiny of millions, the Government of Mexico has drawn its sword against a silent and gentle enemy. Through an announcement full of determination, the Ministry of Health revealed a series of healthy measures that promise a reduction of almost 7% in the lethal consumption of sugary drinks during its first two years of crusade. The heart of this strategy is a proposal incorporated into the 2026 Economic Package: a contribution of one peso, a tribute to health, applied to these drinks through the IEPS. But this is just the beginning. The offensive is complemented by the deployment of a massive awareness policy under the banner of “Live healthy, live happy”, a mission whose sole objective is to save lives and prevent countless diseases.
At the epicenter of this hurricane of change, the President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, emerged as a modern heroine. With the conviction of someone who fights a just war, he highlighted that the soul of these healthy living measures beats with a single motivation: the well-being of Mexicans. His speech was not about finances, but about survival. Reducing the consumption of these modern elixirs, as sweet as they are dangerous, is crucial due to their disastrous relationship with chronic degenerative diseases that lurk in the shadows of every home.
“She has a health motivation,” she declared with the serenity of a leader who knows the magnitude of her battle. “The objective has nothing to do with raising money, but the other way around, with not drinking so many sugary drinks, not abusing sugary drinks, because of the effect it has on the health of all of us, and particularly boys and girls.” These words, pronounced in the sacred trench of the morning conference “Las mañaneras del pueblo”, resonated like a solemn oath.
A Global Example That Inspires the Struggle
The Undersecretary of Sectoral Integration and Coordination of Health Care Services, Eduardo Clark García Dobarganes, took the baton to reveal that Mexico is not alone in this battlefield. With the precision of a strategist, he detailed that these types of measures are applied in 119 countries, weaving a global network of resistance. The United Kingdom, for example, achieved a feat by reducing sugar in its soft drinks by 30%. South Africa bravely saw a 29% decline in consumption. Chile registered a drop of 21%. And in distant Berkeley, California, there was an unprecedented victory: a 52% reduction after three years of strict implementation.
The memory of 2014 emerged as an omen. In that year, Mexico implemented for the first time an IEPS for each liter of soft drink. The results were a spark of hope: a 5.5% drop in consumption in the first year, and an abysmal 9.7% in the second. Now, the country takes a bold step, a leap into the void with faith, by increasing this tax to 3.1 pesos per liter. This translates into an increase of one peso in the final cost of the most common 600 milliliter version, a small price for a healthier future.
The tension was palpable as the harsh reality that justifies this epic fight was revealed. Between the IMSS, the ISSSTE and the IMSS Bienestar, a colossal fortune, close to 180 billion pesos, is invested to address the medical consequences of overweight and obesity, those horsemen of the modern apocalypse that lead to chronic degenerative diseases. The statistics are terrifying: today, 4 out of every 10 IMSS consultations are related to this type of condition. One hundred thousand souls a year are trapped in the dialysis or hemodialysis machine. Twenty-seven thousand amputations are recorded every year, a tribute of flesh and blood. Diabetes claims the lives of more than 100,000 people annually, and one in three deaths from heart attacks is associated with hypertension or diabetes. Each issue is a tragedy, an interrupted story.
To confront this darkness, Health Secretary David Kershenobich Stalnikowitz laid out the map of a brilliant counteroffensive. Four monumental actions, pillars of the “Live healthy, live happy” strategy, will see the light of day. The first, Prevention and Promotion: a massive campaign that will invade digital media and even video games, sowing the seeds of healthy lifestyles in the youngest minds. The second, Modern care at the first level: with the mandatory National Health Care Protocols (PRONAM), telemedicine for screening, remote monitoring with the support of artificial intelligence and cutting-edge detection methods. The third, innovative treatments available to everyone, without distinction. And the fourth, a Comprehensive Strategy for Transplants and Kidney Replacement to increase dialysis and hemodialysis coverage, strengthening donation and the capacity to procure organs, a last act of hope.
The fate of a nation hangs in the balance, and every decision, every measure, is a beat in the heart of this battle. The road ahead is arduous, but the promise of a healthier Mexico is a light that guides this monumental crusade.
