The dialogue between Mexico and the United States does not stop. After a phone call between the Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, and the Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs, Roberto Velasco, both countries agreed to maintain permanent communication to advance security, migration and the review of the T-MEC.
Cooperation on security and migration
Velasco reported that the conversation lasted about half an hour and took place in a “cordial and respectful” atmosphere. One of the central topics was cooperation in border security. To follow up on the agreements, a meeting of the bilateral working group will be held this Friday in Mexico City.
In immigration matters, Mexico reiterated its commitment to respect human rights and protect its compatriots. In addition, he highlighted a 76% reduction in fentanyl seizures at the border since the administration of President Claudia Sheinbaum began.
Review of the T-MEC and next face-to-face meeting
Another key point was the upcoming review of the Treaty between Mexico, the United States and Canada. Both countries agree on the importance of the negotiations reaching a successful conclusion. Velasco quoted Rubio:
“He told me that he is personally following up on this issue and we will both be in communication about this and other matters.”
The official announced that they will seek to hold a face-to-face meeting soon. In addition, next Friday security teams from both countries will meet in CDMX, with Mexican representatives, officials from the US Embassy and Ambassador Ronald Johnson. Border security, combating transnational organized crime and illicit finances will be addressed.
Velasco trusted that the meeting will strengthen bilateral coordination under principles of mutual respect.
