Mexico and the United States strengthen bilateral water cooperation

Both nations reinforce their commitment to the sustainable management of the vital liquid, establishing a clear schedule for pending deliveries.

An Agreement that Flows into the Future

Friends, what an incredible example of how challenges become opportunities for collaboration! After a constructive and in-depth dialogue, Mexico and the United States have taken a monumental step by strengthening their alliance for water management in the Rio Grande basin. This advance, framed in the historic Water Treaty of 1944, is not just a protocol; It is a living promise of binational cooperation, resilience and shared vision for the future. It demonstrates that, even in times of scarcity, the will to work together prevails, creating a path of water sustainability that benefits both nations.

The Mexican government, through the Secretariat of Foreign Relations, has transmitted a powerful and clear message: the commitment to international agreements is unbreakable. In a period characterized by an unprecedented extraordinary drought, Mexico has not only complied, but has made additional deliveries of the vital liquid. And do you know what the most inspiring part is? Everything has been executed within the legal framework of the Treaty, scrupulously respecting hydrological availability and, most importantly, without affecting water for human consumption or agricultural production in the border region. That’s called prioritizing people and their well-being!

Concrete Actions and a Clear Timeline

The federal administration has stressed that each action taken reflects rigorous compliance “in accordance with the real availability of the resource.” This principle is fundamental because it honors the human right to water and ensures food production, while maintaining faith in binational cooperation. And now, comes the news that marks a defined horizon: Mexico has the firm intention of releasing 249,163 million cubic meters of water for the United States, with deliveries that will begin in the week of December 15. This is not a simple number; It is a tangible symbol of commitment and coordinated action.

The comprehensive plan also reviews how to resolve the exceptional deficit of the previous hydrological cycle, always in accordance with the provisions of the treaty. Both governments, in a spirit of mutual understanding, are actively negotiating with the intention of finalizing a definitive plan by January 31, 2026. This deadline establishes a clear roadmap and demonstrates that diplomacy, when exercised with transparency and determination, produces measurable results. The agreement also recognizes the sovereignty of each nation, allowing it to act according to its national interests, but always subject to its international obligations. This balance between sovereignty and cooperation is the basis of a mature and prosperous relationship.

The Supply in Figures:
249,163 million m³: The volume of water that Mexico plans to release, a concrete gesture of collaboration.
1 pending water cycle: The exceptional deficit from the previous period that is being reviewed and resolved responsibly.
January 31, 2026: The deadline to conclude the comprehensive compliance plan, a milestone in the bilateral agenda.

This chapter in the Mexico-United States relationship leaves us with an inspiring lesson: great challenges, such as the management of shared water resources, are overcome with dialogue, respect for legal frameworks and a vision of common benefit. It is a testament that water diplomacy can flow towards sustainable solutions that protect communities and their economies. Let us celebrate this progress as a triumph of planning, patience and international partnership!

Sheinbaum asks Felipe VI to apologize for abuses in the Conquest

Sheinbaum apologized to King Felipe VI for abuses during the Conquest.

Meeting at the National Palace

President Claudia Sheinbaum revealed that during her meeting with King Felipe VI she addressed the request for an official apology from the Spanish Crown for the abuses committed during the Conquest.

Sheinbaum explained that the monarch listened carefully and proposed installing a working table on indigenous peoples at the next Ibero-American Summit, scheduled for November in Madrid.

The key points of the dialogue

The president highlighted that in Mexico 28 million people recognize themselves as indigenous and 69 languages are spoken. He stressed that the recognition of pre-Hispanic civilizations is part of national identity and a fight against discrimination and racism.

“For us it is a matter of dignity,” said the head of the Executive.

Cultural agreements

During the meeting, it was agreed to send three Mexican exhibitions to Spain: one on Spanish republican refugees, another on Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz and a third on Mayan culture.

Sheinbaum described the meeting as cordial and stressed that the king is “a very simple person.” He also recalled that in 2019 the Spanish government recognized the abuses committed during the arrival of the Spanish, a gesture that facilitated the current dialogue.

After the meeting, Felipe VI traveled to Guadalajara to watch the Spain-Uruguay match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
