Mexican divers shine with silver despite cancellation

The Mexican diving team wins silver in international competition while facing the cancellation of a world championship.

Silver that tastes like gold!

Osmar Olvera, Randal Willars, Gabriela Agúndez and Aranza Vázquez have just shown that Mexican diving talent knows no borders. With 460.85 points, they won the silver medal in the mixed team event.

China took the gold with 469.40 units, while Canada completed the podium with the bronze (448.80). A minimal difference that speaks of the incredible level that our athletes showed.

Jiuyuan Zheng, Renjie Zhao, Jiaxi Cui and Jian Chen were the Chinese quartet that emerged as the best team in this test.

Sweet news in a bitter moment

This victory comes when the national aquatic sport is going through difficult times. World Aquatics confirmed the cancellation of the Diving World Cup that was going to take place in Guadalajara from March 5 to 8.

The authorities are already moving chips. President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that they will seek to dialogue with the organization to maintain competition in Jalisco. The possibility of moving it to Mexico City is also being considered, although nothing is confirmed yet.

What is certain is that these four divers taught us a lesson: hard work always pays off, even when circumstances are not ideal. Its silver resonates loud and clear in the midst of uncertainty.

Ghana sours Panama with a goal in added time

A goal in added time gave Ghana the victory over Panama.

A goal in agony

Caleb Yirenkyi became Panama’s nightmare. The Ghanaian striker finished off a Brandon Thomas-Asante cross in stoppage time to seal the 1-0 lead in Toronto. The match, locked and without clear chances, seemed destined for a draw. But in the last play, Thomas-Asante overflowed from the left and sent a cross that Yirenkyi pushed to the back, before the departure of Orlando Mosquera. Ghana’s euphoria contrasted with the tears of Panamanians in the stands.

Panama fails to score its first point in the World Cup. In his debut in 2018, under the command of Hernán “Bolillo” Gómez, he lost all three of his games. Now, in Group L, they have two defeats (against Croatia and Ghana) and are last. England leads with two wins.

Ghana played without its star Thomas Partey, who was denied entry to Canada while he awaits trial on a sexual assault allegation in England. The only shot on goal in the first half was from Cecilio Waterman, whose shot was stopped by goalkeeper Ati-Zigi.

The result complicates the outlook for Panama, which still has to face England. The Canalera team is looking for its first joy in the World Cup.
