A musical that refused to lie about its success
Seventeen years old. More than a thousand functions. Almost three million viewers. The figures for ‘Mentiras, el musical’ sound like fiction, but they are as real as the applause that does not stop at the Aldama Theater.
This week, the work that became a cultural phenomenon celebrated its anniversary with Manuel Mijares as godfather. And the interpreter could not contain his emotion.
“It is an honor to step on this stage that has filled us with so much magic,” said Mijares to applause. “What this work gives you is to transport you completely to the 80s, a decade where great stars emerged who continue to shine to this day.”
From the stage to the ‘multiverse’
But this isn’t just well-executed eighties nostalgia. According to producer Oscar Carnicero, we are facing something extraordinary: the number one musical in Spanish and number 13 worldwide in its category.
“Mentiras is a very rare phenomenon in Mexican theater but also in the world theater,” explained Carnicero. “It’s attracting new audiences to the theater.”
And more is coming. A lot more.
The team is working on something “bigger than Mentiras All Star” for September in Mexico City. An expansion of the musical’s ‘multiverse’ with many guest figures.
Will the original cast return? Difficult. Natalia Sosa, Mónica Huarte and company have complicated schedules, and Mariana Treviño (the star of Club de Cuervos) lives in the United States.
But there is another gift on the way: an album with the music from the show plus bonus tracks, possibly before June 2026.
The secret: love and gratitude
During the celebration, actresses such as Paola Gómez, Jimena Cornejo and Regina Velarde joined Mijares to unveil the commemorative plaque. An emotional moment that summarizes what has kept this project alive.
“The story of Mentiras is one of love, of gratitude to you (the public),” said Carnicero. “We hope to turn 18.”
In an industry where many shows barely survive for months, ‘Mentiras’ has been proving for 17 years that good stories—and well-chosen eighties songs—don’t go out of style.
Now we just have to wait and see what this expansion of the multiverse brings. Because if this musical has shown anything, it is that it knows how to reinvent itself without losing its essence.
