Context and Background
In response to the restrictive immigration policies implemented by the Donald Trump Administration, legislators of Mexican origin in the United States are coordinating efforts to protect the rights of the migrant community. The Mexican-American Policy Alliance (MAPA), a bipartisan coalition, called a press conference in Mexico City to announce a binational summit in September, where legal strategies and public policies will be discussed.
Objectives and Strategies
Assemblyman David Álvarez, president of the Select Committee on California-Mexico Affairs, highlighted that the objective is to share successful experiences between states. “In California, we have promoted laws that protect migrants from arbitrary raids and deportations,” he stated. Examples include initiatives to ensure access to driver’s licenses and legal processes for undocumented workers, measures already adopted in Nevada and New Mexico.
“Public safety and dignity go hand in hand. Nevada made history by approving licenses for undocumented immigrants, a model for other states,” said Cecilia González, congresswoman from Nevada.
Impact and Challenges
Jesús Ramírez Cuevas, Mexican presidential advisor, denounced violations of human rights during the raids in the US. “It is a campaign of terror against Latinos, especially Mexicans,” he stressed. Given this, the summit will seek to articulate legal and diplomatic responses, with the participation of legislators from Texas, Arizona, Illinois and New York, states with diverse immigration realities.
Tayrin Riojas, co-founder of MAPA, emphasized the importance of including local leaders: “Border mayors like El Paso’s face different challenges than those in cities like New York.” This heterogeneity requires adapted solutions, from labor protection to access to basic services.
Conclusion and Projection
The summit represents an unprecedented effort to counter the climate of persecution through cross-border alliances. Analysts predict that the resulting proposals could influence federal immigration reforms, especially on issues such as temporary legal status and combating discrimination.
