Because nothing says “dialogue” like a wall of angry teachers
Ah, the National Coordinator of Education Workers (CNTE), those educators who, when they are not teaching grammar, teach master’s degrees in closing streets. This Tuesday, they decided that their study plan included a practical workshop on how to ruin President Claudia Sheinbaum’s breakfast. The dissident teachers – who, ironically, often complain about the lack of resources – demonstrated to be excellent in blockade logistics, taking the accesses to the National Palace as if they were desks on strike.
Fences vs. magisterial rage: the duel of the century
Despite the fact that the government deployed fences and police as if they were surprise exams, the teachers came armed with their most lethal weapon: the patience of those who have been waiting for a salary increase since 1994. Streets such as Moneda, Correo Mayor and Corregidora became the setting for this artistic performance titled “Neither step nor let pass”. Officials and journalists – those beings who believed that their credential made them immune to chaos – stared at the spectacle with the same helplessness as a student who forgot his homework.
Meanwhile, Sheinbaum, from some hidden place in the Palace, was probably thinking: “Do they really prefer protesting under the sun than teaching classes?”. But hey, at least the teachers are teaching something valuable: how to turn a morning lecture into an episode of Survivor.
Moral? If you ever doubted the power of education, here is proof that teachers can paralyze a country before you finish your coffee. Of course, no one knows if this protest will count as union hours or as extracurricular.
