Gallardo’s youthful bet that brought River’s smile back

Gallardo bets on youth and River breaks its losing streak with a key victory against Banfield at the Monumental.

The formula that River needed

After three falls in a row, the air in Núñez smelled of change. And Marcelo Gallardo, that guy who always seems to have an ace up his sleeve, understood it perfectly. His response wasn’t a motivational speech, it was an alignment. He put faith in the kids.

And boy did they respond.

Youth with character

In a Monumental that asked for a reaction, the young people that Gallardo trusted did not shrink. They played without the weight of the latest results on them, with a freshness that infected the entire team. It was watching them and remembering why we love this sport: pure courage on the grass.

“The decision to field a younger team was key to reversing the negative streak,” the club said.

The final 3-1 win over Banfield was not just a victory. It was a declaration of principles. Gallardo demonstrated, once again, that his greatest talent is reading the right moment in the locker room and acting.

This victory comes on the seventh date of the Apertura Tournament and gives River back not only points in the table, but something more valuable: confidence. The mood on campus and in the stands changed completely.

For Gallardo’s cycle, this may be that breaking point everyone was waiting for. The guy who wrote the club’s recent golden history knows that processes have ups and downs. The important thing is how you react.

Today, River reacted by playing the football that made him great. With grit, with kids from the house showing their faces, and with a Doll on the bench who does not lose his calm even when the waters are more turbulent.

The smile with which he closed his second cycle (for now) is more than justified.

Australia advances to round of 32; Paraguay awaits as best third

Australia secures a place in the round of 32 after a goalless draw against Paraguay.

The Australian team sealed its ticket to the round of 32 of the 2026 World Cup. It did so after drawing 0-0 with Paraguay at the San Francisco Bay Stadium, within Group D.

Classification assured

With this result, the Socceroos added four points, enough to secure second place in the sector. The defensive order was enough to neutralize the South American attacks during the 90 minutes.

Paraguay also closed the group stage with four units. However, the tiebreaker criteria relegated him to third place. Now the Guaraní squad will have to wait for the other groups to close to find out if they enter among the eight best third places that advance to the next round.

The tie reflected a close match, where neither team managed to break the zero. Australia fulfilled its objective of qualifying, while Paraguay awaits the remaining results.

United States falls to Türkiye but manages to qualify

Dramatic 3-2 at SoFi Stadium does not prevent the United States from reaching the round of 32.

The United States team lost 3-2 to Türkiye at SoFi Stadium, but secured its ticket to the round of 32. The European team said goodbye to the tournament with a victory in its last match.

Party development

The game started at a slow pace. In the 2nd minute, Auston Trusty took advantage of a corner kick to open the scoring. Türkiye reacted quickly: in the 10th minute, Arda Güler, from Real Madrid, equalized after a defensive oversight.

The United States tried to regain the lead, but a goal disallowed for offside in the 29th minute baffled them. Türkiye capitalized: in the 32nd minute, Orkun Kökçü turned the score around (2-1). With that result the first half ended, amid complaints from the Los Angeles fans.

In the second half, Sebastián Berhalter equalized in the 48th minute to make it 2-2. The US coach sent Alejandro Zendejas to the field to look for greater offensive depth, but an injury to Trusty in the 90th minute threw the defense out of balance. In stoppage time, Kaan Ayhan scored the final 3-2.

Implications

The defeat raises doubts about the team’s performance heading into the next phase, although qualification is already assured.
