Katy Perry sanctioned for environmental violation in Ibiza
The singer Katy Perry has been subject to an administrative sanction by the Spanish authorities after confirming that her production team recorded a video clip in an ecological protection zone without the required permits. The case, recently closed, involves a fine of 6,000 euros (approximately 130,000 Mexican pesos) for violating Balearic environmental legislation.
Details of the violation
According to the newspaper El Español, the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Natural Environment of the Balearic Islands determined that the production company WeOwnTheCity, responsible for the video clip “Lifetimes”, did not request mandatory authorization to make recordings in the dune system of s’Espalmador, an islet classified as an area of high ecological value. The scenes were filmed in July 2024 during the production of the audiovisual material.
Although Capitol Records, Perry’s record label, claimed to have verbal approval from a local company, investigations confirmed the absence of an official document endorsing the activity. This omission constitutes a serious infringement according to regional regulations, which seek to preserve fragile natural spaces.
Consequences and resolution
The fine imposed reflects the deterrent nature of the sanction, although the authorities ruled out irreversible environmental damage. In a statement, they highlighted that “permanent impacts” on the ecosystem were not evident, which prevented additional measures. However, the case sets a precedent for future productions in sensitive areas.
This incident coincides with an increase in the supervision of commercial activities in Spanish nature reserves, where audiovisual projects require prior environmental impact assessments. Conservation experts emphasize the importance of these protocols to avoid the degradation of vulnerable habitats.
Legal context and reactions
Balearic legislation establishes penalties that can reach up to 200,000 euros for serious violations in protected areas. In this case, the reduced amount suggests a valuation proportional to the real ecological risk. Perry’s representatives have not issued additional statements following the payment of the fine.
Environmental organizations such as Greenpeace have taken advantage of the episode to remember the responsibility of public figures in promoting sustainable practices. “Art should not compromise biodiversity,” said a spokesperson on social networks.
