Julieta Venegas responded to the criticism that arose on social networks after presenting “The Soccer Girl”, a topic linked to cultural activities leading up to the 2026 World Cup.
The Mexican singer clarified that the piece seeks to promote gender equality and girls’ access to sports.
“The whole time we were working on the song I imagined a girl who dreams of playing soccer, and someone tells her that she can’t,” she explained in a statement.
Venegas added that he composed the song with love to inspire girls and adults to pursue their goals without letting themselves be stopped by obstacles.
The song is a new version of a song originally performed by the children’s group Patita de Perro.
The intention, according to the artist, is to encourage little girls to play and have fun, in a context where women’s sports continue to gain visibility.
