Historic double for Italy at home!
Italian skiers Simone Deromedis and Federico Tomasoni have just given a lesson in mastery in men’s skicross. In a final held under the snow of Livigno, they won gold and silver, respectively. A result that makes an entire host country vibrate.
Deromedis, the current world champion, was unstoppable from the start. He took control and did not let go for a second throughout the entire course full of jumps and curves. His teammate Tomasoni completed the feat by beating the Swiss Alex Fiva in a final that required a photo finish.
“It was an incredible race. I knew I had to come out strong and stay focused until the end,” Deromedis commented after the victory.
For Fiva, 40, this bronze is added to the silver he already won in Beijing 2022. A long and successful career for the Swiss veteran.
The Japanese Satoshi Furuno was just short of the podium, while the defending champion, Ryan Regez, had a day to forget. He was eliminated in the semifinals after receiving a yellow card for impeding another competitor.
This Italian victory comes just after Germany’s Daniela Maier took gold in the women’s event on Friday. Skicross is leaving epic moments in these Games.
The key: discipline, explosive start and staying calm when it matters most. Deromedis and Tomasoni showed that sometimes the most important thing is to perfectly execute what you have trained thousands of times.
