First case of hantavirus in Israel: what we know
The Israeli media Maariv reported this Thursday the first diagnosed case of hantavirus in the country. But be careful: it is not linked to the MV Hondius cruise ship, as some might think.
It is believed that the patient became infected during a stay in Eastern Europe several months ago. He went to the doctor after presenting symptoms associated with the disease. The media did not provide details about his place of residence or the medical center that diagnosed him.
How did the contagion occur?
According to information obtained by Maariv, the patient underwent an antibody test after the onset of symptoms, which revealed exposure to hantavirus. A PCR test was subsequently performed to detect the genetic material of the virus, which confirmed the infection.
Confirmed details: the patient is stable. He has not required intensive care or strict isolation, but is under medical observation. The case has already been notified to the Ministry of Health.
“The hantavirus that circulates in Europe, unlike the Andes virus, is not transmissible between people, but is spread through contact with sick rodents. Its lethality is lower than that of the Andes strain.”
Between 2021 and 2023, the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) reported 9,017 cases of hantavirus.
What does the Ministry of Health do?
The European hantavirus mainly causes Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome (HFRS), affecting the kidneys and causing symptoms such as fever, low back pain and kidney dysfunction. Authorities are already monitoring the situation.
