Because paying is stupid, Infonavit now rewards late payments
Attention, lovers of other people’s things and chronic debtors! Infonavit, in an outburst of revolutionary generosity, has decided that invading property is no longer a crime, but rather a housing opportunity. Yes, as you read it: if you didn’t pay your loan or simply snuck into someone else’s house, congratulations! The government gives you a golden path to keep it. Who said that bad actions have no reward?
Sheinbaum: the fairy godmother of defaulters
By orders of President Claudia Sheinbaum (who, by the way, seems to confuse social justice with rewarding illegality), Infonavit will not evict the 145 thousand irregular occupants. No no. Instead, they will offer you the property at a “very affordable” price (read: almost given away). Octavio Romero Oropeza, director of the institute and former head of Pemex (yes, the same oil company that is a bottomless pit of corruption), justifies it with the delicacy of an elephant in a china shop: “We are not going to remove them, but we will tell them that if they do not regularize themselves, they will never be owners.” Oh right, because an empty warning is just what someone who has already proven not to follow rules needs.
And if that were not enough, for those who are not even right holders, Infonavit has invented a rental scheme with the option to purchase. In other words, you pay a pittance to live there and, in a few years, voilà! The house is yours. Does anyone else smell the subliminal message of “invade now, worry later”?
The census of shame: 843 thousand “problematic” homes
According to Romero, there are 843 thousand homes with problems (translation: occupied by defaulters or squatters). But fear not, the government is doing a census to determine the “specific problem” of each one. Because, obviously, when someone doesn’t pay their mortgage for years or gets into a house that isn’t theirs, the real mystery is what motivated them. Lack of money? Lack of ethics? Nah, it’s probably something more complex, like a philosophical puzzle.
So far, they have censused 168 thousand homes, of which 145 thousand are occupied by debtors or invaders. But don’t worry, Infonavit is not rewarding irresponsibility… wait, it is! Because in this country, whoever does it does not always pay for it. Sometimes, they are even given a house.
What’s next? Prizes for tax evaders? Medals for kidnappers? With this logic, we will soon have a “If you rob a bank, you keep 50% of the loot” program. Overall, social justice justifies everything.
