One more step in the search for justice (with all the drama that implies)
If you thought that the Pasta de Conchos case was just an uncomfortable memory in the file of “things that Mexico has not resolved”, get ready for a new chapter. The institutions of the Unified Command (yes, that group that sounds like it’s in an action movie but actually deals with real tragedies) announced that this Friday they identified Mauro Antonio Sánchez Rocha, one of the miners who was trapped in that underground hell in 2006. Yes, 2006. When Facebook was only for college students and no one knew what a “tweet” was.
Families: between relief and pain that never ends
The news was first given to their relatives, who, with a dignity that leaves us speechless, agreed to share it with the rest of the victims and society. Because, of course, in this country even tragedy is collective. With this case, there are now 20 families who have received the bitter confirmation that their loved ones will not return. Of them, 16 have had a dignified delivery (or as close to “dignified” as can be achieved after 18 years of waiting). The other 4 are in process, because, guess what, bureaucracy and forensic science do not run like in CSI.
So far, 23 miners have been recovered, but there are still 3 to be identified. Three. A number that seems small until you remember that each one has a name, a story and a family still waiting. And no, it’s not a Netflix thriller, it’s real life.
Meanwhile, the rest of the country continues to be distracted by the current political scandal or the latest viral meme. Because, let’s be honest, how many of us were actively remembering this case before reading this note? Exact. Therein lies the real drama.
What’s next? More wait. More procedures. More promises. And, hopefully, one day not too distant, something that resembles justice. Or at least peace.
