Two cases in older adults
The Guanajuato Health Secretariat confirmed two cases of screwworm myiasis in 75-year-old people, one in Celaya and the other in Tierra Blanca. Both patients received timely medical attention, specific treatment and specialized follow-up. They satisfactorily concluded the epidemiological surveillance period and only continue to be monitored for previous chronic diseases.
As of May 18, 2026, 221 cases of screwworm had been detected in 18 municipalities in the state, but only two in humans. Guanajuato represents 0.8% of the 254 national cases and ranks 13th in incidence nationwide.
“The screwworm is an infestation caused by fly larvae that lay their eggs mainly in open wounds. It is a preventable and treatable condition when it is identified early,” the agency explained.
The SSG clarified that this condition is not transmitted between people and that there is no generalized risk for the population. He recommended keeping the wounds clean and protected, going to a medical evaluation for wounds that do not heal or present discharge, bad odor or infection; Maintain personal hygiene, use repellent and avoid exposing wounds to flies.
“In Guanajuato there are trained personnel, established protocols and permanent surveillance to respond to any epidemiological event,” said the Secretariat. The authorities maintain coordination with federal agencies to strengthen early detection and timely care.
