Historical debut at home
At just 17 years old, Gilberto Mora is already part of the history of world football. The Mexican midfielder became the sixth youngest player to set foot on a World Cup field, only behind legends like Pelé, who debuted five days younger.
His presentation was at the opening match of the World Cup that Mexico co-organizes with Canada and the United States. El Tri beat South Africa 2-0 at the Azteca Stadium, and in the 65th minute, Mora took to the pitch.
“I once had a dream: to be able to play with my team in a World Cup,” he wrote on Instagram upon learning of his call-up on May 31. The fans welcomed him with chants of “Mora, Mora, Mora.”
Early talent and projection
Son of former soccer player Gilberto Mora Olayo and born in Tuxtla Gutiérrez, he trained in the Tijuana quarries. At just 15 years old he made his debut in Liga MX and his rise was dizzying: he stood out in the U-20 World Cup in Chile 2025 and added minutes in the Gold Cup with El Tri.
Coach Javier Aguirre praised his performance: “I have had several debuts, among them Chicharito Hernández, Carlos Vela and Rafael Márquez. Gil is preparing; I think he didn’t look out of place.”
Hugo Sánchez, a historical reference, also praised him: “He has tremendous self-confidence, quality, technique and he already visualizes what he should do.”
Mora joins the club of those who made their senior debuts at youth level, such as Pelé or Lionel Messi. On the streets of Mexico City, fans already see him as a symbol. “He is a child, very young, but he has shown enormous talent. A lot is expected of him and we have to take care of him,” said Pedro Guzmán from the stands.
The future is promising for this youth who is already writing his own history in Mexican soccer.
