“It is not a finished task and there is still a lot to do”
Omar García Harfuch, the Secretary of Security, appeared this Friday at the morning conference of President Claudia Sheinbaum. He did so from a military battalion in Michoacán to present the progress of the Michoacán Plan for Peace and Justice, activated after the assassination of the mayor of Uruapan.
His keywords were a rare acknowledgment: “it is not a finished task.” He said that there is coordination and the presidential instruction to reinforce the strategy, but the phrase remained floating in the air. Like an uncomfortable reminder.
The official figures of the operation
The head of the SSPC released numbers. From October 2024 to January of this year, they speak of 1,218 arrests and more than a thousand weapons seized. Since the national strategy against extortion started last July, they say that crime has decreased by 13.8%.
“It is not a finished task and there is still a lot to do,” said García Harfuch.
He mentioned 2,812 complaints to 089 that led to 158 investigations and 118 arrests for extortion. The narrative is one of technological deployment and approved protocols. From patrols in avocado and lemon orchards.
Arrests seeking headline
Among the notable arrests, those of people accused of controlling the collection of fees from agricultural producers stand out. He named César Alejandro ‘N’, linked to the ‘El Bótox’ cartel and the murder of producer Bernardo Bravo.
Also actions against ‘Los Blancos de Troya’, a group that uses drones and explosive devices. The list includes 430 more arrests, hundreds of weapons, thousands of cartridges and more than 700 kilos of methamphetamines seized.
They are data to show muscle. But that first phrase, that of the unfinished task, is the one that remains echoing. In a state where violence has deep roots, the advertisements clash with a stubborn reality. The plan is moving forward, they say. Peace, that is still a promise.
