No presidential aspirations for now
The Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, Omar García Harfuch, ruled out running for the presidency in 2030. He described it as “irresponsible” to think about a candidacy while he is at the head of the federal Security Cabinet.
García Harfuch recalled that in 2024 he obtained 40.5% support in internal Morena polls for the Head of Government of Mexico City. She surpassed Clara Brugada, who registered 26.7%. However, the gender parity applied by the INE forced the candidacy to be assigned to Brugada, who won the election and took office in October 2024.
A seat in the Senate and his place in the cabinet
In the same process, García Harfuch also won a seat in the Senate with more than 3 million votes. He competed under the Sigamos Making History coalition alongside Ernestina Godoy. He requested leave to join the federal cabinet.
Currently, his substitute Francisco Chíguil Figueroa occupies the seat in the LXVI Legislature. García Harfuch maintains his public presence without seeking a presidential candidacy in the short term.
The decision aligns with its focus on the federal government’s security strategy, without electoral distractions until further notice.
