The class of 2024 has everything
Phil Collins, Iron Maiden, Sade, Oasis and the Wu-Tang Clan. Sounds like the most epic random playlist your algorithm could make, right? Well, they are the new members of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
The list was leaked during American Idol, which is ironic considering some of the inductees. More than 1,200 artists and experts voted. It wasn’t a popularity contest on TikTok.
A quick review of the star signings
Phil Collins was already in for Genesis, but now he’s entering alone. The man who gave us “In the Air Tonight” and those legendary drum solos.
Iron Maiden finally. The lords of British heavy metal with albums like The Number of the Beast. Eddie, the mascot, deserves his own seat at the ceremony.
“Wu-Tang Clan has been hailed as rap innovators since their 1993 debut album,” the statement said. And it’s true. They changed the game forever.
Sade with its eternal soul-jazz. Oasis bringing 90s Britpop to the pantheon. And an emotional nod to Luther Vandross, whose voice even inspired Kendrick Lamar.
Joy Division/New Order also enter. Basically, they’re cramming the entire Manchester post-punk and new wave scene into one package. British efficiency.
The ceremony will be on November 14 in Los Angeles. It will then be seen on ABC and Disney+. Next year they return to Cleveland, their home.
It is a list that ranges from metal to rap, including soft rock. As if they wanted to cover all the tastes of a generation that grew up with MTV and now scrolls on TikTok. Something for everyone.
