Fiorentina and Atalanta tie and seal seasons to forget

1-1 draw closes irregular campaigns for Fiorentina and Atalanta in Serie A.

A bitter closure for two clubs in decline

Fiorentina and Atalanta tied 1-1 in a match that reflected their irregular campaigns in Serie A. Both teams finish the tournament with mixed feelings and far from their initial goals.

Roberto Piccoli put the Viola ahead just before the break. However, an own goal by Pietro Comuzzo eight minutes from time gave Atalanta the tie. That goal left Fiorentina in 14th place, its worst position since 2019. The Florence club started the season in a disastrous way: it did not achieve its first victory until matchday 16. An improvement in the new year kept it away from relegation, although it depends on the results of Genoa and Cagliari to avoid falling further.

Atalanta, from the Champions to the Conference

For Atalanta, the situation was also disappointing. After qualifying in the top four in the previous two seasons, this year he will finish seventh. That spot gives them a ticket to the Conference League, but they have only won one of their last seven league games. The Bergamo squad could not sustain the pace and was left without elite European options.

Both teams will have to rebuild for the next campaign. The directives are already evaluating changes to avoid repeating these results.

MLB proposes salary cap that revives the fight with the union

The league proposes a five-year limit and a salary cap. The union rejects it.

MLB seeks to impose a salary cap and limit contracts to five years

Major League Baseball introduced a proposal that would limit most free agent contracts to five years and 15% of a team’s salary cap, in addition to eliminating deferred compensation. The move, detailed Thursday in a negotiating session, is likely to spark a showdown with the players’ association.

The union responded harshly. Bruce Meyer, his boss, said in a statement:

“These deceptive offers are designed to look like upgrades, but they have little or no value, since they are expressly conditioned on an agreement with the league’s salary cap system, which eliminates the free market.”

The league also proposed raising the minimum salary from $780,000 to $1 million for players with two years of service, and raising the pre-arbitration bonus pool from $50 million to $65 million next year, and to $75 million by 2032.

As part of the plan, MLB would agree to advance free agency one year for players who turn 30, but conditional on the salary cap. The proposal includes a payroll floor of 171.2 million and a ceiling of 245.3 million for 2026, figures that would impact teams like the Dodgers, whose current payroll exceeds 415 million.

Glen Caplin, MLB spokesman, stated:

“The biggest issue fans want resolved is the payroll disparity. Every other major US sport has addressed this issue. The proposal levels the playing field.”

Negotiations began on May 13 to replace the agreement that expires on December 1. Owners are expected to impose a lockout in December if there is no progress, as occurred in 2021-22. Meyer warned: “Attempts to pit players against each other have failed in the past and will fail again.”

MLB would also prohibit deferred compensation, a practice used by the Dodgers, who owe nearly $1.1 billion in future payments to 10 players. Additionally, it would implement a “franchise player” system similar to the NBA, with specific salary caps based on years of service.

F1 activates heat protocol for the Austrian GP

F1 activates the heat protocol for the first time in Europe in the face of temperatures that will exceed 31°C.

Extreme heat at the Austrian GP

For the first time in Europe, Formula 1 activated the “heat danger” rules for the Austrian Grand Prix. The protocol, introduced in 2023, applies when the forecast exceeds 31°C. For Sunday, 32°C is expected, and inside the cockpit the thermal sensation is even greater.

Pilots must wear cooling vests with liquid that circulates through tubes, connected to a pump inside the car. The FIA took this measure after health incidents at Qatar 2023. It was previously applied in Singapore and Austin.

Extreme training

Oscar Piastri (McLaren) anticipated that the exit will be the most difficult: “When there is no air coming in, it is worse there.” To prepare, he installed portable heaters in his bathroom and an exercise bike. “You cause discomfort, pain. I do it for performance, not for pleasure,” he explained.

Pierre Gasly (Alpine) trained in Milan in the heat. For his part, Sergio Pérez (Cadillac) downplayed the importance: “I’m Mexican, this is not so hot. It makes me laugh that Europeans worry.” Even so, he will wear the vest.

Activation of the protocol forces all pilots to carry cooling equipment or extra weight to avoid advantages. Some consider it uncomfortable, but safety is a priority.
