A call for transparency and ethics at the Universidad Veracruzana
Education is the pillar of our society, and universities must be beacons of integrity! The former rectors of the Universidad Veracruzana (UV) have raised their voices to remind the Governing Board of the importance of following the regulatory framework to the letter in the election of the next rector. Its message is clear: the autonomy and credibility of this university are at stake.
In an act of ethical commitment, figures such as Víctor Arredondo Álvarez, Raúl Arias Lovillo and Sara Ladrón de Guevara González have highlighted that even the slightest deviation from the rules could tarnish the prestige of the institution. Because? Because each decision must reflect institutional transparency and respect for the values that define a public university.
The debate on the call and the age limit
The heart of this controversy beats in the call for the election of the rector. It has been noted that the current rector, Martín Aguilar, seeks to eliminate the maximum age requirement (65 years) for applicants, which some consider an attempt to perpetuate himself in office. The former rectors insist: the rules are not suggestions, they are legal mandates that must be fulfilled with punctuality and clarity.
In an open letter, these academic leaders have stressed that the UV deserves an impeccable process, where each step—from the issuance of the call to the monitoring mechanisms—is carried out without ambiguity. Because the future of thousands of students and the reputation of the university depend on it!
“It is not just an administrative issue; it is a question of public trust and legitimacy,” they remarked. And they are absolutely right: in a world where misinformation is rampant, educational institutions must be examples of integrity and stability.
University autonomy as a flag
Autonomy is not a privilege, it is a responsibility. The former rectors have recalled that university legislation precisely establishes the steps to appoint the rector, with no room for arbitrary interpretations. Any alteration of the process, they warn, would open the door to arbitrariness that could weaken the UV.
This is a key moment to reflect: what type of leadership do we want for our universities? One that prioritizes social commitment and respect for norms, or one that puts decades of collective effort at risk. The answer seems obvious, but it requires action.
Let’s let the voice of reason and ethics guide this process! Share this message so that more people know the importance of defending transparency in higher education. Together, we can inspire change that strengthens the Universidad Veracruzana and all institutions that believe in a better future.
