A news that leaves us speechless
The world of football is in mourning. Alex Manninger, the former Austrian goalkeeper who shone with the Arsenal shirt and other big clubs, died this Thursday in a tragic accident. His car was hit by a train in Salzburg.
I have to pause writing this. Sometimes sport teaches us about life, but today the lesson is hard and reminds us how fragile everything can be.
The clubs say goodbye
Manninger was only 48 years old. He left his mark on teams like Juventus and Red Bull Salzburg, who were one of the first to react. His message on social networks says it all:
“We mourn our former goalkeeper Alexander Manninger, who tragically lost his life in a traffic accident. Our thoughts are with his family and friends. Rest in peace, Alexander.”
That last sentence hurts. Rest in peace. As a former athlete who also had to face abrupt endings due to injury, I understand that void that is left when someone leaves too soon.
His career was remarkable. A solid, reliable goalkeeper, who knew how to be between the three sticks in moments of maximum pressure. Those qualities – discipline, concentration, resistance – are the same ones that we need today to process this news.
From London to Turin, from Austria to Italy, the football community joins its voices to say goodbye to a teammate. He is not just another name in the news. It’s Alex Manninger. A guy who defended goals with honor.
Today there is no tactical analysis that is valid. All that remains is to remember his career and send strength to those who loved him. To his family, to his friends, to his former locker room colleagues.
Football loses one of its own. We lose a story of effort and dedication that ended too quickly.
