“They demerit us for being Mexican”: the strong denunciation of Erick Sánchez
Erick ‘Chiquito’ Sánchez, América midfielder and recent national team player, does not mince words. For him, there is a clear problem that stops Mexican soccer players: their passport.
The statement that resonated strongly. In a forceful interview, the man from Pachuca launched a direct criticism of the European market. His point is clear and he repeats it without hesitation.
“I am sure that any of the Mexicans who are in the selection and were not here would have already been sold to Europe for whatever amount.”
But it doesn’t happen. And Sánchez has a theory about why.
The invisible barrier. The player did not want to delve into the specific reasons, but he made his personal perception clear. A perception that hurts and frustrates.
“I don’t know why, it’s something that’s not my place to say, but personally, the fact that we are Mexican… people in Europe think that we are not worth it and they are very wrong.”
For him, it is an unfair prejudice. An automatic demerit even before seeing the player in action.
Quality and character. What bothers him most is that this idea clashes head-on with the reality that he lives and sees every weekend. The quality exists, and to spare.
“If you realize there is impressive quality in all the teams and in the Mexicans. We could play anywhere.”
And he doesn’t just talk about technique. It speaks of something more visceral, of the mettle that defines many within the field.
“It seems to me that they detract little from us and we are aware that we are Mexicans and we have the balls to go out and have a hard time anywhere and when we have an opportunity we are going to take advantage of it.”
A call from within. Sánchez’s statement is not the lament of a spectator. It is the frustration of a protagonist. From someone who is there, in the elite of Mexican soccer, watching how teammates with the talent to make the leap hit a wall.
A wall that, according to him, has a lot to do with the letters ‘MEX’ on his identity document.
