El Mencho’s son-in-law receives more than a decade in prison in the US

The American justice system closes its grip on the capo's family with a sentence that exposes the organization's luxurious methods.

Guacho’s “fake” life is over: 11 or so years of paid vacations

Well yes, friends of digital life, the drug trafficking soap opera brings us a new chapter worthy of a Netflix script, but with very, very real consequences. Cristian Fernando Gutiérrez Ochoa, alias “Guacho”, has just won an all-paid trip to a United States federal prison for the next 140 months. His crime: being the son-in-law of the most wanted boss, Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera, and dedicating himself to the creative world of money laundering for the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). The ironic thing is that the guy had already faked his own death to escape, a plot twist that didn’t turn out so well in the end.

It turns out that “Guacho” was living his best life in California, under a false identity, as if he were a character in a video game with a poorly applied cheat code. Together with his girlfriend (daughter of the aforementioned boss) they lived in a 1.2 million dollar mansion, financed, obviously, with dirty money from drug trafficking. A true love story… sponsored by methamphetamine and cocaine. Until the gringo authorities, who don’t have much sense of romance, put a stop to it.

The “mistake” of his life and the judge’s speech that is scary

In court, with all the solemnity that the moment required, “Guacho” appeared repentant. He said he accepted responsibility for his “mistake” and would never make one like that again. Awww, how cute. What he did not mention is that his “mistake” included laundering millions and, according to accusations in Mexico, being linked to the kidnapping of two sailors. Things from everyday life, you know.

But the one who really stole the show was federal judge Beryl Howell. When passing sentence, he did not mess around. He declared that the CJNG is a “dangerous force” within the United States and that “Guacho’s” life was “a dangerous way to make a living” and “a dangerous way to live.” Basically, it gave him the award for the biggest Red Flag of the year. Prosecutors, who asked for 14 years, painted him as a trained and infiltrated agent, far from being a simple lucky boyfriend.

Meanwhile, the defense lawyers tried the letter of the “rehabilitated young man” who seeks to rebuild his life with integrity. A laudable effort, although it sounds like dialogue from a bad redemption movie that no one believes.

El Mencho and his family: the most problematic family tree in Mexico

The conviction of “Guacho” is only the last piece in the judicial puzzle against the Oseguera family. El Mencho’s brother-in-law, José González ValenciaRubén “El Menchito” Oseguera, has a room reserved for life after being sentenced to life imprisonment. It seems that family reunions are going to have to be by video call from different maximum security penitentiaries.

The most surreal thing about all this lore is that, according to the authorities, El Mencho told his partners that he had killed his own son-in-law for being a liar. In reality, “Guacho” had only put on an entire theater of his death to escape to California. A level of drama that even the Kardashians would envy.

With a reward of 15 million dollars on the head of El Mencho and the designation of the CJNG as a terrorist organization, the United States is pulling all its legal artillery. The message is clear: the luxury party with drug money can end in a cell where the only influencer you will follow will be the guard on duty.

Yes to disarmament: 11 thousand weapons delivered since October

The anonymous exchange program advances with financial incentives and toy barter.

Results of the Yes to Disarmament program

The Secretary of the Interior, Rosa Icela Rodríguez, reported that since October 2024, 11,139 firearms have been exchanged. The exchange is anonymous and in exchange for economic incentives, as part of the Attention to Causes strategy.

During the morning conference by President Claudia Sheinbaum, Rodríguez explained that the program also allows war toys to be exchanged for educational materials. The objective is to promote a culture of peace in girls, boys and young people.

Prevention actions

The head of the Interior highlighted the “Festivals for Peace”, community activities and youth programs. These actions seek to bring the government closer to the communities through tours and direct attention in areas with social problems.

In addition, new educational spaces for high school have been created, the “Ponte Pila” program has been strengthened, and reading campaigns and cultural activities are promoted. Peace councils that address family violence and substance abuse operate in 14 states.

Rodríguez assured that the federal government will continue working with local authorities to build safer environments.

UNAM and IMSS launch strategy against HIV

UNAM and IMSS offer preventive treatments against HIV to students and workers.

HIV prevention program for university students

The National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) signed an agreement to provide preventive treatments against HIV to their community. The objective is to reduce the risks of infection among students, teachers and administrative staff.

As part of the strategy, Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) will be made available. This medication, when used properly, reduces the chance of contracting the virus by up to 99%. It is intended for those seeking additional protection before possible exposure.

Also included is Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP), an emergency treatment that must be started within the first 72 hours after a risk situation, such as a condom breaking or sexual violence. The scheme lasts 28 days under medical supervision.

Authorities noted that prevention requires a comprehensive approach. The program includes periodic HIV testing, distribution of condoms, care for sexually transmitted infections and vaccination against the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) and hepatitis B.

This agreement strengthens the health tools available to the university community, combining institutional resources to confront HIV from prevention.

FBI returns to Mexico historical document signed by Hernán Cortés

A document signed by Hernán Cortés in 1527 returns to Mexico after three decades of searching.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) of the United States delivered to Mexico a document from the 16th century with the signature of Hernán Cortés. The piece was stolen from the country more than 30 years ago and is now under the protection of the General Archive of the Nation (AGN).

Recovery after an auction in the US

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) reported that it is a payment order dated February 20, 1527. It belongs to the Hospital de Jesús fund of the AGN, which contains several folios with signatures of the conqueror.

The recovery process began in 2022. Mexican authorities received information about the sale of the document in a US auction house. After gathering evidence of its origin and belonging to the national heritage, Mexico filed a complaint with the Attorney General’s Office of the Republic.

The document, of incalculable value, is already in Mexican territory. The collaboration between the FBI and the Mexican authorities allowed his return, which concludes a long process of investigation and diplomatic management.
