Goodbye, Coneval: The Senate decides that Inegi will now be the “influencer” of poverty
In a movement that left more than one with a frown (and others celebrating as if it were the launch of the iPhone 25), the Senate of the Republic decided that the Coneval is no longer fashionable. Yes, that organization that for years uncomfortably reminded us that poverty in Mexico is not just a meme. With 73 votes in favor (and 34 against, because the opposition still exists, surprise), they approved the reform that transfers the functions of the National Evaluation Council to Inegi, because apparently measuring misery with two institutions is a luxury that we cannot afford. Austerity or opacity? You decide.
The political move: “What is not measured does not exist”
The discussion in plenary lasted more than three hours, which is equivalent to approximately 17 TikTok reels or the time it takes a deputy to delete a controversial tweet. Morena and his allies rejected all the opposition’s observations with the elegance of a teenager ignoring his parents’ advice. The result: 71 votes in favor and 34 against to approve the unreserved articles. The laws changed? The General of Social Development, the Federal Budget and the Government Accounting Law. Basically, Inegi will now be the new “influencer” of poverty, but without the Instagram filters.
The opposition, as expected, did not remain silent. Agustín Dorantes (PAN) released the phrase of the day: “What is not measured, cannot be improved”, followed by “this is opacity disguised as austerity.” Anabell Ávalos (PRI) was more dramatic and spoke of the government’s “legacy of destruction and poverty,” because in politics excess drama never hurts. Meanwhile, Amalia García (Citizen Movement) compared the disappearance of Coneval with the policies of Javier Milei and Donald Trump, because nothing unites the political class more than the art of international name-dropping.
And of course, the classic “what about the money?” could not be missing. The 9.3 billion pesos that previously went to Coneval will now be in the hands of Inegi, which raised suspicions that they could end up financing something as useful as an official NFT of the Mayan Train. But hey, at least there’s no more “duplication of duties”, right?
What’s next? The decree has already been sent to the Executive for publication, so prepare yourselves for the next chapter of this institutional soap opera. Meanwhile, poverty is still there, waiting for someone to measure it… or not.
