More than a million hands to paint the field
The figure is round, almost too perfect: 1.2 million young people went out, according to the official bulletin, to rehabilitate fields throughout Mexico. The Mexican Youth Institute (IMJUVE) calls it the National Tequios Day. I call it textbook social mobilization.
They brought brushes, paint and rollers. They painted stands, drew lines and repaired goals in more than 10,000 public spaces. The stated objective: to prepare the ground for the ‘Social World Cup 2026’, that initiative parallel to the FIFA Cup that promises to leave more than just stadiums.
“These actions prepare the ground for the Social World Cup 2026,” says the statement.
The geography of participation is revealing. The states with the highest attendance were Michoacán, State of Mexico, Puebla and Guerrero, among others. Just some of those who usually lead the lists of poverty and marginalization. Chance or strategy, there it is.
Peace is painted with a broad brush
All of this is framed, they tell us, in the National Strategy for Peace and Against Addictions. President Claudia Sheinbaum’s political flag finds its soldiers in young people. The coordination involved the SEP, Segob and normal schools. An inter-institutional effort that smacks of political curriculum.
And this doesn’t end with the paint drying. Next March 26 comes the ‘National Day of Cascaritas and Pull-Up Contests’ on those same newly opened fields. Registration opens on February 23. Stay up to date on the IMJUVE networks, of course.
A massive mobilization, an impeccable social discourse and an agenda that extends for months. The ball is already in play long before the first whistle of 2026.
