A destiny at stake: the financial battle of the IMSS
In the depths of the Mexican health system, a storm is brewing. The Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS), that colossus that protects more than 80 million souls, is waging an epic battle against time. Zoé Robledo, its director, raises his voice like a general in the midst of chaos: “We have solvency until 2037,” he declares with the firmness of someone who knows that the clock does not forgive. But will it be enough?
The figures are as dramatic as an unexpected twist in a soap opera. In six years, IMSS reserves have tripled, going from 200 billion pesos in 2019 to 600 billion today. A titanic achievement, yes, but the organization’s financial report casts a shadow of doubt: only eight years of solvency remain before the deficit devours its coffers. The year 2033 is emerging as an abyss, a point of no return… unless the magic of prevention and efficiency achieves the impossible.
The strategy: between lights and shadows
Robledo does not give up. With the passion of a hero in his speech, he lists the weapons to avoid collapse: purchasing controls, digitalization, massive surgeries, preventive consultations. Each word sounds like an incantation against destiny. “We have extended financial sufficiency nine more years since 2018,” he proclaims, as if time itself were bending to his will. But what if the numbers don’t lie?
Meanwhile, in the shadows, criticism lurks. Éctor Jaime Ramírez Barba, PAN deputy, throws a poisoned dart: “The IMSS spends badly”. He accuses a lack of telemedicine, slow services, medications that are conspicuous by their absence. “The beneficiaries run away and that… that is their only ‘savings’!” he blurts out with the crudeness of a villain revealing the uncomfortable truth. Cancer, diabetes, hypertension: diseases that devour resources while the system creaks.
The scenario is worthy of a thriller: on the one hand, the promise of new hospitals and programs like “Salud Casa por Casa”; on the other, the ghost of a bad expense that corrodes the foundations. Who will win this game? The future of millions hangs in the balance.
