A gala night for an artist who has everything… except an Oscar (for now)
It seems that Cynthia Erivo was missing an award on her already crowded trophy shelf. The actress, singer and producer, who has already won a Tony, a Grammy and an Emmy, and who has been nominated by the Film Academy three times (yes, only three, imagine the drama), will be honored with nothing more and nothing less than the 18th Annual Kirk Douglas Award for Excellence in Film. Because, clearly, his resume needed a little more weight.
The event, which is part of the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, will take place on December 4, 2025 at a gala dinner at the exclusive Ritz-Carlton Bacara. There, between expensive canapes and glasses of champagne, funds will be raised for the festival’s educational programs. A laudable cause, to be sure, although one can’t help but wonder if the price of the main course includes a selfie with Michael Douglas.
The Douglases’ praise: sincere flattery or public relations strategy?
Michael Douglas, son of the legendary Kirk, did not skimp on adjectives when justifying the choice. He declared, with the solemnity that the moment requires, that Erivo is a “singular talent” whose “depth, scope and fearless commitment” embody the spirit of her father. Of course, he didn’t mention whether he also inherited his famous cleft chin, but let’s be fair: that would be asking too much.
He said, verbatim: “It is entirely appropriate that I receive the Kirk Douglas Award, which recognizes bold artistry and lasting impact in film.” Which leaves us to speculate: how “bold” do you have to be to impress the Douglases? Play a role singing opera on a mechanical bull? Because Erivo, with her role as Harriet Tubman and her voice to melt glaciers, seems to have passed the test with flying colors.
Meanwhile, the 41st Santa Barbara International Film Festival will take place from February 4 to 14, 2026. A perfect date for film lovers to forget to buy their partner chocolates and instead get into a heated argument over the footage of a Latvian documentary. Romance, after all, takes many forms.
So get ready to see Cynthia Erivo smile politely, thank you gracefully, and maybe, just maybe, cast a furtive glance toward the horizon wondering when the hell the Academy will finally give her that little golden man that’s been resisting her. In the meantime, this award is a consolation rather than a decorative one. And who knows, maybe the Kirk Douglas trophy will be the good luck charm he needed.
