Arrests and links to organized crime
The Attorney General of the Republic (FGR) confirmed the arrest of José Ascensión Murguía Santiago, mayor of Teuchitlán, Jalisco, for his alleged relationship with the Izaguirre ranch case. Murguía, a member of Citizen Movement (MC), is not the only member of this party associated with organized crime. In December of last year, Anabel Ávila Castrejón, mayor of Coalcomán, Michoacán, publicly recognized Nemesio Oceguera Cervantes, leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), thanking him for delivering toys at a Christmas event. This act led to an investigation for possible links with criminal groups.
Emblematic cases in Zacatecas and Morelos
In Zacatecas, Mauro Yuriel, former mayor of Apulco, was dismissed after being accused of collaborating with Gerardo González Ramírez, “El Geras”, leader of the CJNG in the region. According to revealing audios, Yuriel would have coerced a state police officer to work with the cartel in exchange for freeing kidnapped relatives. On the other hand, in Morelos, Mario Aguirre Gutiérrez, brother of an MC candidate, was murdered after being accused of his alleged links to crime. Witnesses link the homicide with an intimidating message towards his in-laws.
Controversial history and additional accusations
The former mayor of Taxco, Mario Figueroa Mundo, a fugitive from justice, faces charges of forced disappearance. During his administration, the control of La Familia Michoacana over basic products and the increase in violence was documented. In addition, Alejandra Morales, former MC candidate in San Nicolás, was linked to proceedings for gender-based political violence, although the party denounced persecution. Cases such as that of Jorge Álvarez Máynez and Dante Delgado, accused of defamation, reflect a pattern of legal controversies.
Implications and national context
These incidents occur in a context where the FGR has intensified actions against criminal infiltration in local governments. Experts point out that the recurrence of cases in MC raises questions about its internal oversight mechanisms. In 2023, 14 militants were arrested after taking over the Nuevo León Congress, evidencing internal tensions and questionable methods.
