Constant triumph for Chivas in the Morelos Cup
Club Deportivo Guadalajara showed solidity in its first match of the Morelos Cup, defeating 2-0 Atlante at the Agustín “Coruco” Díaz Stadium. This result not only guarantees them a place in the Final, but also allowed the debut of midfielder Richard Ledezma, one of the most anticipated reinforcements of the season.
Strategy and key alignment
The technical director Gabriel Milito opted for an experimental forward with Javier “Chicharito” Hernández and Alan Pulido, while in defense he tried Luis Romo as a center back. The starting lineup included Óscar Whalley in goal; Alan Mozo, Miguel Tapias and Miguel Gómez at the back; Daniel Aguirre, Omar Govea and Érick Gutiérrez in midfield; and the youth Santiago Sandoval (17 years old) completing the attack.
However, the game was not without setbacks: “Chicharito” left the field after 23 minutes after a facial blow, and Omar Govea retired before half-time due to a physical discomfort. In addition, the state of the grass made the development of the game difficult.
Decisive moment and rojiblanco dominance
The first goal came in the 27th minute, when a cross from Daniel Aguirre was deflected into his own goal by rival defender Francisco Reyes. In the second half, Chivas maintained control of the match, with clear opportunities to increase the score. Teun Wilke saw a goal ruled out for offside, while Cade Cowell wasted a one-on-one with goalkeeper Gabino Espinoza.
Goalkeeper Óscar Whalley responded with confidence in the few interventions required, including a key at the end that prevented a tie. The final 2-0 was scored by Armando “Hormiga” González in a combined play with Rubén González, thus sealing the pass to the final.
Next challenge: León in the final
Next Sunday, June 22, Chivas will face León in the grand final of the Morelos Cup, a match that promises intensity and where Milito’s team will seek to consolidate its good moment. The debut of Ledezma and the depth of the bench suggest an encouraging outlook for the rojiblanco team.
