A Roller Coaster Encounter on the Border
Club Deportivo Guadalajara staged one of the most spectacular and dramatic comebacks of the day at the Caliente Stadium, rescuing a point in extremis against the Xolos de Tijuana with a final 3-3. This match, characterized by its high intensity and constant changes in the scoreboard, revealed both the defensive vulnerabilities of the visiting team and its unwavering capacity for offensive reaction.
Argentine strategist Gabriel Milito implemented significant tactical modifications in his initial scheme, looking for solutions to the streak of adverse results. The most notable decision was to relegate attacking midfielder Roberto Alvarado to the bench, giving the young youth squad value Santiago Sandoval the starting opportunity. In addition, it was decided to reinstate Luis Romo in the center of the field and form the central defensive duo with Gilberto “Tiba” Sepúlveda and Miguel Tapias.
Adverse Start and Defensive Errors
The contest began in the worst possible way for the red and white team. Just after the first minute of play, Richard Ledezma suffered an injury that forced his immediate departure, with Alan Mozo taking his place. The situation quickly worsened in the 4th minute, when a serious error in the release of the ball between Tapias and Sepúlveda was capitalized by Gilberto Mora, who defined with precision before the departure of goalkeeper Raúl “Tala” Rangel to put the locals ahead.
The first half passed with few clear chances for the Sacred Flock. A deflected shot by Efraín Álvarez and a key intervention by goalkeeper Antonio Rodríguez against a shot by Sandoval were the only dangerous approaches. However, in the final moments of the first half, a crucial moment occurred: the main referee, Katia Itzel García, signaled a penalty in favor of Tijuana for a foul by Diego Campillo on Jackson Porozo. It was the fifth consecutive penalty that Chivas caused against them. Adonis Preciado took charge of the shot, but “Tala” Rangel rose to make a spectacular save, keeping his team alive.
Trepid Second Part and In extremis Reaction
For the complementary period, Milito exhausted his tactical resources with the introduction of Alvarado, Cade Cowell and Daniel Aguirre. However, the nightmare seemed to intensify in the 50th minute, when Frank Boya anticipated the entire Chiva defense to hit an aerial ball and apparently seal the match at 2-0. Controversy took over the match minutes later when an expulsion of Iván Tona, which left Chivas with a numerical advantage, was revoked after the intervention of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR). To make matters worse, Tijuana extended the lead to 3-0 with an own goal by Luis Romo, a play that was also validated after a review of the monitor by the referee.
With the score against and time against them, the Chivas began a comeback to remember. At minute 73, Armando “Hormiga” González reduced the gap with a powerful shot. Hope was definitively reborn in the 84th minute, thanks to a work of art by Efraín Álvarez, who executed a masterful direct free kick that sailed unstoppably into the upper corner of Rodríguez’s goal. In a display of character and determination, and when everything seemed lost, in injury time, Roberto “El Piojo” Alvarado appeared to complete the feat with a spectacular left-footed shot that sealed the final tie, unleashing madness among the visiting fans.
This result, although heroic, leaves a bittersweet taste for the Flock, which adds just 4 points out of a total of 15 possible. The physical cost was also high, with Ledezma and Aguirre himself missing due to injury. Milito’s team now faces another litmus test next Saturday, August 30 at the AKRON Stadium, where it will measure forces with the always complicated Cruz Azul.
