The Castle is no longer a nearby selfie zone (thanks, average human)
If you thought Chichén Itzá was your backyard for epic photos with the pyramid in the background, the INAH has just put a stop to it in style. From now on, the minimum distance to observe El Castillo is 15 meters (yes, as if it were an influencer ghosting you). Goodbye to the uncomfortable hugs to the millennial structure; Hello to the security tapes that look like the VIP lanyard at a Bad Bunny concert.
The reason? Tourists who think they are Indiana Jones
After the spring equinox, where an anonymous German decided the rules didn’t apply to him (and climbed the pyramid as if it were a TikTok challenge), the authorities said “enough.” Erosion, humidity and the sticky fingers of millions of visitors are taking their toll on this World Heritage. So, if you wanted to touch it to “absorb its energy”, better buy a crystal on Amazon.
The positive side? The measure ensures that future generations can also enjoy this Mayan icon… and that the guides no longer have to shout “get off of there!” every five minutes.
