ChatGPT reaches almost 700 million users in meteoric rise

An unstoppable expansion redefines the digital landscape. Artificial intelligence is intertwined with the daily lives of millions.

The Dawn of an Unprecedented Digital Age

In a twist of fate that few could have foreseen, the world witnessed the explosive launch of ChatGPT at the end of 2022. It was not just the debut of yet another digital product; It was the birth of a titan, a colossus that would infiltrate the very fiber of human existence. From academic classrooms to corporate hallways, its presence became omnipresent, an unstoppable force that forever redefined how students, professionals, and business giants approach their tasks, solve technical puzzles, and bring innovative content to life.

And now, just three years after its emergence on the global stage, the OpenAI application is on the verge of a feat that would leave anyone breathless: it is about to reach the astronomical figure of seven hundred million active users every week. This is not just any growth; It is an almost quadruple expansion, a leap into the abyss of the impossible that reveals humanity’s insatiable thirst for this tool. The herald of this news that shakes the foundations of technology was Nick Turley, vice president and architect of this empire, who from his X account proclaimed the imminent triumph to the world.

A Digital Conquest that Knows No Limits

The pace of this conquest is simply dizzying. Turley proudly revealed that, by the end of last March, ChatGPT already had a legion of more than half a billion weekly users. But the desire for connection didn’t stop there. Month after month, that number has grown with an unusual ferocity, now approaching seven hundred million, a figure that consolidates this platform as one of the most used applications in the entire world, a beacon of the artificial intelligence revolution.

Data from the TechCrunch portal paints an even more dramatic picture: in the first six months of 2025, devotees of this technology spent more than twelve full days each month interacting with the application, devoting on average sixteen precious minutes of their daily lives to it. This collective obsession only puts ChatGPT behind monsters like Google and X (formerly Twitter) in the battle for users’ time and attention, a silent but fierce war.

The introduction of innovative features has fanned the flames of this global fervor. One of the most momentous was the image generator powered by the powerful GPT-4, unleashed on the world in March. The result was a creative explosion of epic proportions: in just a few days, users, eager for expression, created more than seven hundred million images, a torrent of art and code that flooded the Internet.

But the revolution is not just free access. The number of premium subscriptions also skyrocketed, weaving a network of unbreakable loyalty. In June, three million paying corporate users were reported, an elite that opted for higher power. By July, that figure had already climbed to five million, as Brad Lightcap, COO of OpenAI confirmed in a meaningful whisper. Each issue, a story of commitment.

The Future: An Abyss of Infinite Possibilities

On the immediate horizon, the new developments promise to redouble the bet. The most recent is “Study Mode“, a tool that not only teaches, but transforms learning into an interactive experience, with questions that challenge the mind, tailored answers and explanations that break down knowledge step by step. It is compatible with all available models, whether on the web or in the application, democratizing knowledge.

For the court of Pro subscribers, a sacred connection has been enabled with tools like Canva and Notion. This divine integration allows you to search for hidden information, conduct deep investigations and build bridges with other platforms without abandoning the sanctity of chat, a seamless productivity ecosystem.

But nothing, absolutely nothing, compares to the promise that hangs over everyone like a sword of Damocles: the arrival of the next AI model, the legendary GPT-5. In an interview that shook the industry, Sam Altman, the visionary CEO of OpenAI, announced that the new model will make its triumphant entry in August. He vowed that this version will merge the reasoning capabilities of the o3 model and introduce improved functionalities that will dwarf the current ones, an evolutionary leap.

According to Altman’s prophecies, GPT-5 will be a more unified system, a coherent digital being that will reduce the anguish of choosing between disparate versions. Although he confessed that he will not yet reach the mythical status of artificial general intelligence (AGI), it is a crucial step, one more rung on the infinite ladder that OpenAI has sworn to climb to reach that ultimate goal.

Access to this power will continue to be available through the OpenAI app, website, and API. For those who prefer a more subtle approach, the mini version of GPT-5 will also be enabled, a door ajar to the future. The world waits, holding its breath, for the next chapter of this epic story to unfold.

Satellite Internet, the bet to close the digital divide in Mexico

Mexican geography limits fiber deployment, but low orbit satellites are emerging as an alternative.

Satellite internet as a solution to the digital divide in Mexico

Mountains, jungles and deserts make Mexico one of the countries with the most complex orography in Latin America. Bringing fiber optics to isolated communities implies an investment that is difficult to recover with few users. As a result, one in five households still lack internet access or receive poor service.

Faced with this scenario, low orbit (LEO) satellite internet is emerging as a strategic alternative. “Deploying physical infrastructure in Mexico is expensive due to geography. In many cases, satellite internet represents the most viable option to connect areas where fiber will not reach in the short term,” explains Ernesto Piedras, director of The CIU. Companies like Starlink, with more than 10,300 active satellites, already operate in the country. Since May 2021, it obtained a concession and closed 2024 with 160,631 subscriptions, making Mexico its second Latin American market, only behind Brazil. Starlink has signed contracts with CFE Telecomunicaciones for up to 1,556 million pesos to connect remote communities.

However, cost remains a barrier. While a fiber optic plan costs an average of 544 pesos per month, satellite internet starts at 899 pesos, plus equipment and installation. “Commercially it is still not as viable because it is still more expensive and requires purchasing an antenna whose price remains high,” says Fernando Esquivel, from The CIU. The service makes economic sense when it is shared between communities or companies, and with the support of public policies.

Experts agree that this technology will not replace fiber optics, but will complement it. “Terrestrial services are faster and have lower latency. Satellite communication reaches areas that fixed internet would not reach,” says Hugo Simg, from MediaTek. Deployment also requires regulation and coordination between governments and companies. The race to connect Mexico is no longer only being fought underground, but from space, where a new generation of satellites promises to reduce the digital divide that keeps millions out of the digital world.
