A piece of history worth a fortune
A simple life jacket has just become the most expensive Titanic item ever auctioned. It was sold for 670,000 pounds sterling (almost 77 thousand euros) to a private collector, as confirmed by the Henry Aldridge & Son house.
The extraordinary thing is that this is the only vest from the famous shipwreck to have reached a public auction in 114 years. The piece far exceeded initial estimates, which were between £250,000 and £350,000.
The woman behind the object
The vest belonged to Laura Mabel Francatelli, a first-class passenger who survived the 1912 tragedy. She wore it before boarding one of the boats that would save her, along with approximately 700 other people.
“This reflects the continued interest and passion for the history of the Titanic, its passengers and crew,” said auctioneer Andrew Aldridge, visibly excited by the result.
What makes this object unique is not only its origin. Francatelli and other survivors signed the vest, which also retains its 12 original pockets and shoulder and side straps.
When a piece of cloth and cork is worth more than many apartments, it is clear that the myth of the Titanic is still very much alive. And that some are willing to pay astronomical amounts to touch it, even if it is through an object that witnessed so much pain.
