Gold with a taste of redemption!
The story of this Saturday in Milan-Cortina is not written only on ice. It is written about character. The Canadian men’s curling team, led by Brad Jacobs, silenced the rumors and beat Great Britain 9-6 to win the gold.
It is their first Olympic title since Sochi 2014. And boy did they need it.
The storm before the calm
Last week was complicated. The sport was shaken when accusations emerged of double touch against some Canadian players, a technical violation. Marc Kennedy even had a heated exchange with a Swedish rival.
“I am very proud of our week and our fight. We never gave up,” said Rachel Homan, captain of the women’s team that won bronze.
That phrase could apply to boys too. After losing a match after the controversy, they put themselves back together. They stabilize. And they reach the final.
On Cortina’s historic ice, Mouat (GB) missed some key shots. Canada took advantage, got three stones in the ninth end and sealed the victory.
Jacobs returns to the top after missing the 2018 and 2022 Games in the national trials. Kennedy, Gallant, Hebert and Tardi complete a team that showed that the best answer lies in fair play and concentration.
Meanwhile, Great Britain is still waiting for its first gold in men’s curling since… 1924!
A great day for Canada: the women, led by Homan, won bronze against the United States after losing in the semifinals to Sweden.
The lesson of the day: In sport, as in life, what matters is not how you start, but how you finish. And these Canadians finished at the top of the podium.
