Economic radiography
Campeche and Tabasco will have the weakest Gross Domestic Product (GDP) results this year, according to the 2026 edition of the Banamex Regional Economic Activity Indicators.
The Campechana economy contracted 13.6% in 2025, after falling 7% in 2024, according to the Quarterly Indicator of State Economic Activity of the Inegi. It was the entity with the most severe drop last year. By 2026, analysts Guillermina Rodríguez and Jesús Márquez estimate a decrease of 3.4%. In 2027, the state GDP would fall another 2.1%, accumulating four consecutive years in the red.
The state governed by Layda Sansores had exceptional growth of 7.4% in 2023, driven by public investment in the Mayan Train. But the completion of the work generated a significant negative impact. Added to this was the fall in oil mining.
Tabasco also registered a contraction of 5% in 2025, after falling 6.7% in 2024. Banamex foresees a minimum rebound of 0.1% for this year and an advance of 2% in 2027. The construction of the Dos Bocas refinery temporarily benefited the entity, but its completion, together with the decline in oil mining, slowed growth.
Both states share a high dependence on oil. The completion of megaprojects such as the Maya Train and Dos Bocas, added to the decrease in oil activity, explain the negative performance. The outlook for 2026 and 2027 remains bleak for the region.
